The Orphans of Cathorna
The so-called greatmen are heavy-set, thick-limbed humanoids. Their heavy jaws, flattened noses and slightly sloped foreheads give them an air of primitive humanity, though they could pass for human if one were sufficiently drunk and the lights were down low. Their skin tone is slightly darker than the average Cardolani, with a hint of brown and perhaps a slight greyish pallor. Their hair is black, straight and thin on their heads, with sparse coarse body hair, though no facial hair. Their stance gives them away at a distance: they seem to lean back from the hips while holding their heads straight, with the result that their usually round bellies protrude, their chins are close to their chests, and their arms seem to dangle behind them. Despite their primitive, almost comical appearance, there is no question that they are powerfully built, with muscular shoulders and arms, thick, massive bones and a long reach. They have been witnessed to wear skins, use a simple language, some tools and a degree of cooperation on the one occasion they have been seen out of captivity.
Height is an uncertain question. Greatmen betwen 6.5 and about 7 foot tall were encountered twice, at the entrance to the kobold caves (chained to the wall) and in the metal mine in Thror’s Hills (corpse vine zombies). A pair were also seen at Armagil’s Lake in May 1640, fishing with clubs. This pair were only seen at a distance, but were at least nine feet tall. A conservative guess would put their weight at close to a quarter of a ton each.
