The Orphans of Cathorna
Teph is an experienced logger who lost his father Goss in a rafting accident a year ago. He has taken over the business (such as it is) and consistently brings back a dozen good spruce trees a week from the high stands upriver. The work is very dangerous (the trees grow in treacherously steep country populated by trolls, goblins and other things with more legs than brain cells), especially because returning his haul to town requires lashing the lumber together and floating it downstream to Cathorna’s little dock (there is no overland route). Raft collapses in the Sonder rapids are common, as are attacks by goblin archers on the shore. At 25, Teph is stoic beyond his years, almost to the point of being fatalistic. He believes he is destined to die in his craft, and is simply filling in time until it happens. Neeshka takes great delight in teasing him, though he is one of very few who does not respond to her.
