The Orphans of Cathorna
Leader of Cathorna
The current leader of Cathorna, Tamas Palanto led the original band of men from Nin-in-Elph to the site. He is now seventy five years old and still strong, leading many to believe he is of Dunedain blood, a rumour he neither confirms nor denies. Originally the leader of a militia company in Metriath, he left the city with his men and their families when law and order broke down prior to the city’s sacking, seeing a safer place away from marauding Dun bands. Travelling north only replaced these attackers with Rhudaur and even Angmar, until he heard the stories of Cathorna. With his sergeant Slonim Breghaus (who died fighting the kobolds), they led a rag tag band into the hills to their promised land. He remained essentially the military dictator for ten years, until civic pressure forced him to appoint a council of elected representatives. The Council has persisted since, increasing from an initial five to the current seven (including the leader).
Palanto now largely acts as mayor, military commander and advisor to the council. He leaves most decisions to them, only voting to break ties and acting as appeal judge where necessary. He spends his time drilling the militia and training individuals in matters military, hoping to pass on his knowledge while he is able. He regularly journeys to Cameth Brin and occasionally ‘somewhere north’ for reasons unknown.
His wife, Mira Palanto, plays a limited part in village life. She seems to be ageing faster than her husband, and looks every one of her seventy years, plus some. She rarely ventures outside the redoubt, only going to the inn with Palanto, or down to the river wall or store with her handmaiden. She scrubs up as well as she can for social and civic occasions, but everyone recognises she is fading. Tamas is supportive of her, but it is clear he recognises her mortality looms. Neeshka occasionally takes her out around the village for very slow walks.
