The Orphans of Cathorna
Elven patriach until Fourth Cathorna
An elder elf, Dellaran is generally believed to be related to Elesse, although nobody knows how. The small elven clique made it clear that discussing such things with outsiders was appallingly rude, so conjecture is all anyone has. Regardless, he seems to act as a guide and mentor to her on all things. He is also the only person in the village willing to teach magic. Most of the village has approached him about learning the mystic arts at some time, but his first request is that they memorise a long scroll which he calls ‘the history of spellcraft.’ Since it is written in elven, this weeds out ninety percent of petitioners. The more persistent discover he also teaches elven to anyone who asks, and thus can start people on the road to becoming mages. He has two or three students at any time and is always willing to take on more.
Though few are interested in learning the relatively simple cantrips and party tricks he says he can offer, it is clear he is able to teach more. Chaudra consults him regularly, and Dorrigan constantly seeks his counsel. He likes to wander the forests unescorted, sometimes for days, and usually refuses any company, other than one or two of his students on occasion. He makes a living as a scribe for the various merchants and craftsmen.
After Fourth Cathorna, Dellaran left for some days, returning with nine petitioners for residence for whom he vouched. All were accepted on his recommendation, though many were distressed to learn he would not be staying. He stated that Elesse’s death was ‘no small matter’, and that he had to travel west to speak with his kin. In his place, however, the capable and charismatic Aeghlin stayed for a year.
